Reviving Culinary Heritage with 75 Timeless Bulgarian and Croatian Recipes

On the eve of the holiday season, communications professional and author Dr. Manuela Toteva publishes “Sweet and savory – 75 recipes from the kitchen of Nina Diklich” - collection honoring the rich culinary heritage of her grandmother, Nina Diklich. The book brings together 75 sweet and savory recipes from Bulgaria and Croatia, reflecting Nina’s unique family background.

The publication captures authentic handwritten recipes preserved through generations, offering a warm blend of Balkan flavors — from classic Bulgarian pastries and festive desserts to traditional Croatian baked goods and savory favorites. Each recipe uses simple, accessible ingredients that can be found in any grocery store, staying true to the practical, everyday cooking style of Nina’s kitchen. The dishes are easy to prepare, making the book suitable for both beginners and experienced home bakers.

“This project started as a personal family archive. Over time, I realized it carries something larger — a cultural bridge between two traditions that shaped my grandmother’s kitchen,”

says Dr. Toteva.

“Publishing the book before Christmas feels symbolic — it’s a time when families come together, and the recipes inside are exactly the kind that bring warmth, memories, and a sense of belonging.”

The official book presentation will take place in Sofia on 18 December, featuring a visual exhibition of original recipe notebooks and a children’s baking workshop. The book will be available for purchase at the event and online from publishing house Faber at https://www.faber-bg.com/.
